Journey to Hell - Freak Nights 2022 at Blackpool Pleasure Beach - review & photos

Journey to Hell returns once again to Blackpool Pleasure Beach in 2022 and we were invited to the preview night for this newly revamped scare event.

The event has a revised format for 2022, with guests free to choose the order in which they experience each of the attractions. Refreshments are available at FY4 throughout the night.

Upon entering the park, we were taken to an impressive apocalyptic scene with overturned cars and flame throwers, where a guitarist, live DJ, fire performers and roaming characters kept us entertained.

The 8 attractions featured in Journey to Hell:

The Legend Of The Cursed River Caves

Are you feeling adventurous? Explore these cursed caves, where your screams will echo and awaken the legend of the cursed travellers.

We began the night with the River Caves. Guests are loaded into the boats with one person selected to hold a lantern, before being dispatched into the caves. For the most part, boats pass through the caves in near total darkness with a spooky soundtrack playing throughout. There are actors positioned along the route, screaming and squiring water at guests as they slowly drift by.

Rising Ghost Train (NEW)

All aboard, destination FEAR. Something horrific is happening on tonight’s trip. You never know who you might meet on this hair raising journey.

The ghost train looked fantastic in the dark and the addition of scare actors throughout the ride made it even more enjoyable. It was a huge improvement on last year's Day of the Dead overlay, which only featured a handful of characters dancing outside the attraction, with the actual ride unchanged. Each of the scare actors were perfectly positioned, looked suitably scary and really enhanced the experience.

Hell Tunnel

Here piggy piggy. This maze of tunnels is where the outcasts of society gather. It might be dinner time come during your visit, will you escape being on the menu?

A large-scale scare maze featuring a number of different sets and long walkways with plenty of actors providing jump scares at every turn. There was a clearer overarching story this year and the excessive swearing from last year had been toned down.

The underground setting made the experience feel more real, the intensity of the actors really stood out, and the chase finale had us running for our lives. By far the strongest attraction at the event.

Sirens of Infusion (NEW)

Evil can be pretty too. The sirens will bewitch you with their beauty then drag you into their abyss and immerse your senses with their darkness.

Just inside the entrance to the inverted roller coaster Infusion we encountered a mysterious siren, known for luring sailors to destruction on the rocks with their singing. We encountered another creature in the queue, and the ride operators in the station appeared to be the ghosts of mariners lost a sea. We appreciated the opportunity to ride Infusion in the dark, although with the horrendous rattling, shunting and head banging it's a test of endurance more than anything.

The Controllers (NEW)

First you will see them stalking you through the darkness but once they set their sights on you there is no going back. You may feel uncomfortable for a while but once they have control of your mind you are lost to their realm.

Entering the queue for The Big One, we were met by two futuristic cloaked characters, silent yet menacing. They initially blocked our path, before stepping aside to allow us to pass, then stalking us all the way to the station.

Once inside and seated, a brief audio and sound sequence accompanied the dispatch of each train, and the Pepsi Max ride tunnel had added smoke and lighting effects. Riding this famous roller coaster in the dark was a great experience and provided fantastic views over Blackpool.

Later in the night we encountered the sinister characters from the attraction multiple times in different places as they began to roam the park.

The Lost (NEW)

Don’t panic or you may never get out of this hellish maze of rooms. Who knows what may be lurking around each corner.

Located in a cavernous building once home to the Space Invader roller coaster, this new scare maze takes guests on a Journey to Hell.

We were first met by a plague doctor, who guided us into the scare maze. With a combination of themed sets, costumed scare actors, and smoke and lighting effects throughout, it's a solid addition to the event. The finale, in which you finally meet the devil, was quite effective, but the whole experience could be improved by covering each of the spaces so that the full extent of the building isn't visible.

Pleasure Beach Hexpress (NEW)

A dark witchcraft pilgrimage. Let's hope that all of the passengers make the return journey on this cursed locomotive.

Although an excellent idea to use the Pleasure Beach Express as part of Journey to Hell, the implementation of it was completely ineffective.

This narrow gauge railway, built in 1933, usually takes guests on a scenic ride around the park and through numerous themed scenes. For the event, most of the ride was in the dark with no audio or other effects, and no scare actors, so it was pretty uneventful.

The train stopped for a quite a while at another station, where guests at the very back of the train were visited by a couple of characters, but the rest of the passengers just sat in silence waiting for the journey to continue.

Impossible Freak House (NEW)

Roll up, roll up and step into the big top! These are no ordinary clowns, they want to keep your soul forever! Lets hope you escape the impossible.

We ended the night on a high, with the walkthrough attraction Impossible transformed into a creepy carnival filled with evil clowns.

The attraction incorporates a mirror maze and numerous themed scenes, with a good amount of dialogue from the scare actors as well as jump scares.

Once of the most simple yet effective elements, was a balloon-filled corridor in which we were held, intimidated and had balloons popped all around us.

And with that our Journey to Hell was over, so we headed back to FY4 for a final refreshment and were entertained by the guitarist and live DJ.

We cannot fathom why ICON is not included in the event line-up this year, given that the Blind Faith experience last year was so popular. Riders were previously blindfolded for a unique and very effective way of offering something different for the scare event. Not including the park's newest and most popular attraction as part of the event is completely illogical, but aside from that obvious omission, Journey to Hell is a brilliant event that we would definitely recommend.

Journey to Hell at Blackpool Pleasure Beach runs on selected dates until 30th October 2022, from 7pm until 10pm, and tickets for the event cost £39.
